Your Guide to Satisfaction from Tooth Extraction

dca-blog_tooth-extraction-female-patient

When an affordable dentist talks about tooth extraction, they’re describing a dental care procedure where a tooth is removed from its socket. A tooth extraction is a simple way to relieve dental problems. If your dentist in Allentown says that you need an extraction, you may not know what to expect. So here’s an overview for understanding the truth about tooth extraction.

The most common reason for a tooth extraction is when a tooth is impacted, which stops it from growing in normally. This is often why dentists recommend wisdom teeth removal. Other reasons are the need to make room in the mouth for proper tooth alignment and when teeth are damaged and can’t be repaired.

How will you know if you need a tooth extraction?

A simple dental exam will show signs of possible problems. If your dentist suggests a tooth extraction, have the procedure done as soon as possible. Postponing the extraction can cause pain, infection, and misalignment.

Your dentist will x-ray the area to determine the treatment you need. To avoid any complications, you’ll be asked for your dental and medical history, along with a list of medications and allergies.

If the problem tooth is completely exposed, your dentist will perform the extraction with a local anesthesia. If the tooth is broken or hasn’t fully emerged, you’ll be referred to an oral surgeon for a surgical extraction using a much stronger anesthesia. If you need to be given this deep anesthesia, carefully follow the oral surgeon’s instructions about eating and drinking before surgery and arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure.

Know that surgical tooth extractions are more painful than simple extractions because there’s much more involved in removing the tooth. You may be given pain medication for the few days after treatment, but the pain should diminish very soon.

Following your tooth extraction, expect to experience some swelling and pain. Swelling is normal and is actually part of the healing process, but you can reduce it by applying ice packs on the swollen areas. If your jaw is stiff when the swelling subsides, use warm compresses to relieve the soreness

For the first few days after the surgery, you’ll need to be careful with your dental care and how you treat the extraction site:

  • Eat soft foods that are easy to chew and add firmer foods as you feel more comfortable.
  • Don’t use a straw.
  • When brushing your teeth, be extremely gentle near the area of extraction.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for a week after the tooth extraction to allow for proper healing.
  • Don’t smoke.

While the initial healing takes up to two weeks, it generally takes three to six months for the bone and soft tissue to be fully healed. Throughout the recovery process, be sure to follow your dentist’s dental care instructions to avoid any complications that could jeopardize your healing.
