The Best Ways to Battle Tooth Decay

Cavity Prevention

Tooth decay starts with the gradual deterioration of tooth enamel, which is the hard, protective outer layer of your teeth. The main culprit is a sticky film called plaque that forms on your teeth after you eat and drink. Plaque is full of bacteria, and when you consume foods or drinks with starches and sugars, these bacteria produce acids that break down enamel. If plaque is not removed, it allows the acids stay in constant contact with your vulnerable tooth surfaces. Eventually, the deterioration results in holes called cavities.

Tooth Decay Isn’t Just a Problem for Kids

Although cavities are most common in children, aging adults often experience tooth decay associated with age-related oral changes. Receding gums often accompany advancing age, and periodontal disease is also common. The two factors combined give plaque access to tooth roots, which are covered with cementum, a softer and more vulnerable material than enamel. Tooth roots are more susceptible to decay and more sensitive to hot and cold. Tooth-root decay and sensitivity problems are both common in adults more than 50 years old. Tooth decay along the margins of fillings is also frequently seen. Seniors may have more fillings due to the absence of modern dental care techniques when they were young. As the fillings age, they fracture and leak, causing bacteria to accumulate in the small crevices of the tooth surface. Acid exposure in these areas results in decay.

Cavity-Prevention Tips

  • Brush a minimum of twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Use dental floss or interdental cleaners daily.
  • Eat a healthy diet and avoid sugar-filled and starch-laden snacks.
  • Affordable dentists can identify and treat tooth decay before it causes tooth loss.
  • Visit your dentist in Allentown regularly and ask about cavity-prevention treatments, such as dental sealants or fluoride rinses.
