How Your Oral Surgeon Places Your Dental Implant

Missing teeth can have a dramatic impact on your self-confidence. They can even affect how you speak and eat. Fortunately, an oral surgeon can restore your missing teeth with dental implants, which replace natural teeth with functional and natural-looking artificial ones. Implant surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, and it involves a number of steps. The entire process may take as little as three months or longer than nine months to complete; this is because it is necessary to wait for tissues to heal and bone to grow. Listed below are the stages of a typical dental implant placement.

What is the Process for Dental Implant Surgery?

To place an implant, the surgeon will make an incision into your gum tissue to expose the bone. A hole is drilled to make room for the metal post, which serves as the artificial tooth’s root. The post is implanted deep into the bone.

What Is an Abutment?

The abutment is a small device that attaches to the crown of the artificial tooth. To place the abutment, your surgeon will reopen the gum, and attach the piece to the post. After the procedure, the site is allowed to heal for several weeks. When the site has healed, your surgeon can finally place your new artificial teeth. Depending on your needs, you may have a removable implant prosthesis or a permanent, fixed one.

Do All Patients Require a Bone Graft?

Before a dental implant can be placed, you must have enough viable jawbone to support it. If the bone is too thin or soft, bone grafting may be required. The graft involves removing a portion of bone from another part of your body and transplanting it to your jaw. It may take up to nine months for the new bone to grow and stabilize. Oral surgeons are trained to handle this complicated procedure.

How Soon Can the Oral Surgeon Implant My New Tooth?

Once the post is in place, you must wait for osseointegration to occur; during this process, your jawbone grows and bonds with the surface of the metal implant. The process may take as long as six months. Most oral surgeons will provide a temporary, removable denture to wear while you wait for the site to heal.

What Happens After the Dental Implant Procedure?

After your surgery, you may experience swelling, bruising, pain, and minor bleeding. If your symptoms get worse in the first few days after your procedure, call your oral surgeon.
